The Frere hospital can be found in the city of East London. It was
established in 1818. The present Frere hospital building was first used in
1933, it comprised of 202 beds. It is now a six-story building with 1000
beds.
With the integration of hospital services it has now amalgamated with the
services of Ceceilia Makawane hospital and is now known as the Buffalo City
hospital complex. All adult and orthopaedic surgery is now being relocated
to the Frere Hospital and medical, paediatrics and psychiatry to CMH.
With this move our numbers have increased dramatically. We are now doing 200
patients a month. This includes gastroscopies, colonoscopies,
sigmoidoscopies, E.R.C.P’s and bronchoscopies. Our staff totals two
professional nurses and one nursing assistant.
We work independently on the second floor next to surgical outpatients, but
we are linked to main theatre for staffing, supplies and budget. |
