Four hundred and sixty five nurses attended the congress from 26 countries.
The theme for the opening ceremony was World Peace. A flag procession was held for all the countries present, when the South African flag was flown, I felt a lump in my throat.

The social programme for nurses included a Welcome evening and a Canada night with folk dancing and Canadian cuisine, what a cultural experience The academic programme was held over 3 days starting at 8h00 and finishing at 16h00. What impressed me was the punctuality of delegates, house rules were strictly respected.
There were excellent free papers and poster presentations but the highlight of the programme were live video presentation from Canada and Hong Kong. These innovative procedures and cutting edge technology will someday impact on our practice

Sitting there amongst all the delegates I felt proud that my unit at Groote Schuur Hospital and most of the clinics in the Country is on par with most of their procedures and technology.
